A polymicrobial infection can be acute or chronic and is caused by “different combinations of viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites,” said the National Institutes of Health. The Vatican did not specify what kind of polymicrobial infection Francis has further said that it was in the airways, which means that the bacteria are in its lungs.
